Apple and Samsung Electronics Users Might Be Due for a Piece of a 480 million pound Compensation in the UK

Mobile phone users may be eligible for compensation

Approximately thirty million individuals in the United Kingdom who acquired an Apple Inc. or Samsung mobile phone from 2015 and 2024 may be entitled to approximately £17 each if a customer watchdog wins in its legal action against the US technology firm Qualcomm Inc..

Court Case Begins Today

The campaign is escalating the tech giant to the specialized court in London now.

The case involving the advocacy organization and the chipmaker is anticipated to continue for over a month.

The group is claiming the chip company of restrictive behavior.

The allegation is that the corporation pressured Apple Inc. and Samsung to pay inflated prices and licensing fees for critical mobile hardware, which then pushed up the expense of those smartphones for users.

Key Points the Legal Action Will Examine

The trial beginning on Monday will examine whether Qualcomm possessed dominance and, should that be the case, whether it exploited a dominant position.

In the event that the advocacy organization is successful in its claim, there will be a subsequent step requesting £480m from Qualcomm, to be divided between an estimated 29 million UK consumers affected.

The consumer group is claiming compensation for all impacted Apple Inc. & Samsung Electronics mobile phones purchased between the start of October 2015 and January 9, 2024.

The watchdog says this would probably amount at approximately £17 each.

Earlier Cases and Qualcomm's Response

The company has previously said the legal action has "little merit".

A similar claim against Qualcomm is currently underway in Canada, and the company has also earlier been fined by the European Union for anti-competition practices.

The FTC in the America sued the company for unfair practices in the way it licensed its innovations during 2017, but had its claim thrown out in the year 2020.

Significance of the Case

The CEO of the watchdog commented: "This legal action is a significant event. It shows how the power of buyers - supported by our organization - can be used to hold the biggest companies to answer if they misuse their market power."

The firm is one of the world's biggest producers of smartphone chips and has been subject to allegations about unfair practices before.

  • Eligible devices include Apple & Samsung products purchased between the end of 2015 and January 2024.
  • The claimed amount requested is 480 million pounds.
  • Each payout is expected to be about seventeen pounds.
  • The legal action is being held at the specialist court in London.
